Local Residents, Elected Officials, and Business Owners Denounce Proposed J-Turn

INDIANA – The Indiana Department of Transportation received heavy pushback from Miami County residents and officials Tuesday against a proposal to install J-turn intersections along U.S. 31. A large crowd packed into the community building at the Miami County 4-H Fairgrounds during a public meeting with INDOT officials to express strong opposition to the project. That project would entail eliminating the traffic lights along U.S. 31 at the intersections of Indiana 218 West and Indiana 18and install J-turns – an alternative to traditional roadway intersections. J-turns would require traffic turning onto U.S. 31 to first travel south or north for around 650 feet and then make a U-turn into traffic instead of stopping at a light. But local residents, elected officials and business owners unanimously denounced INDOT’s proposal during the meeting, saying the move would make the four-lane highway more dangerous and waste taxpayers’ money on an upgrade that won’t solve any problems.
