Larry J. Chapman

Larry J. Chapman, 86, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at Colonial Oaks in Marion, IN. He was born in Marion, IN, the son of the late Wilbur J. and Opal M. Chapman.

He graduated from Marion High School in 1953 and then earned a degree in English from Wabash College in 1957, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Larry enjoyed a long career at Foster-Forbes, where he worked as an engineer and manager in several different functions, starting their IT department. He served in the Indiana Army National Guard and was on the Board of Directors for Foster-Forbes Credit Union.

He was a true disciple of Christ who taught Sunday School and attended Grace United Methodist Church for many years and, more recently, attended Grace Community Church. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and enjoyed nothing better than spending time with his family. He was a dedicated Boy Scout leader for 40 years, where he had a positive impact on the lives of many young people and was awarded the Silver Beaver award for distinguished service. He enjoyed spending time in God’s creation and golfing with friends, in particular his lifelong friend, Bill (Jane) Boxell. His diverse interests included puzzles, cross stitch, travel, photography, writing poetry, playing cards, and Norman Rockwell art.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 43 years, Rita Chapman, and his sister, Janet (Lawrence) Byer. Surviving is his devoted wife, Shirley Chapman. They shared 16 wonderful years together. Also surviving are his sister, Phyllis (Dave) Sinclair; brothers, Ed (Jan) Chapman and Tim (Sharon) Chapman; sons, Gregory (Kathy) Chapman of Washington, WV, and Don (Tammy) Chapman of Holly Springs, NC; grandchildren, Julia, Alexia, David, Matthew, Nikki, and Lexi. He also leaves his beloved second family, where he was preceded in death by his son, Scott Harris, and survived by children, Julie (Patrick) Keenan and Tracey (Keith) Holmes; grandchildren, Andrea (Mike) Schunn and Ethan (Brandi) Norris; and seven great-grandchildren, Lily, Leo, Ayden, Rashad, Alana, Nola, and Jaxon. His granddaughter, Danielle Stallings, also preceded him in death.

The family will receive visitors from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.

Larry’s funeral service will begin at 12:00 noon with Pastor Tom Mansbarger officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Grant Memorial Park.
