John Michael Neil, 80, of Wabash, Indiana, died at 4:00 pm, Sunday, May 14, 2023, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was born on February 15, 1943, in Norman, Oklahoma, to John Wesley “Wes” and Patricia Katherine “Pat” (O’Connor) Neil.
John was a 1962 graduate of Annapolis Maryland High School, received his associate degree from Anna Arundel Community College, and attended Warrant Officer Flight School. He was decorated US Army helicopter pilot in Vietnam, flying Huey helicopters. He married Sunny Lyn Kissel in Dallas, Texas on April 1, 1967. John retired from Walmart in Wabash, where he worked 12 years, worked 15 years at K-Mart in Wabash, and flew helicopters for Roto-Whirl Inc. for 18 years. He attended LaFontaine Christian Church, and was a member of the American Huey 369.
He is survived by his wife, Sunny Lyn Neil of Wabash; four children, John (Melissa) Neil of Mount Olive, Alabama, Kevin Neil of Cincinnati, Ohio, Dave (Audrey) Neil of Decatur, Georgia, and Leslie Morningstar of Wabash; 10 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren; and his sister, Patricia J. “Pat” Hale of Knottingham, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son-in-law Christain Morningstar.
Per John’s request there will be no services. Arrangements by Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, Wabash.
