Jean Smith, 88, of North Manchester, Indiana, died at 10:35 am, Tuesday, December 13, 2022, at Coventry Meadows in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She was born on July 13, 1934, in White’s Creek, West Virginia, to Phonzo Hoover Harrington and Lora (Collins) Mayo.
Jean was a 1952 graduate of Wayland High School in Wayland, Kentucky. She married Herman Smith in Garrett, Kentucky on January 1, 1955; he died July 14, 1977. She worked at Peabody Retirement Community in North Manchester from 1963 until her retirement in 2004. Jean loved her family and her cat Sheena. She also enjoyed flowers, gardening, being outside, watching the birds, owls and owl memorabilia, and was a big fan of Gone with the Wind.
She is survived by two sons, Herman Thomas (Shirley) Smith of New Carlisle, Indiana, and William Lowell (Cindy) Smith of Advance, North Carolina; and three grandchildren, Courtney Smith of Valparaiso, Indiana, Caitlin Smith of Greeley, Colorado, and Lora Smith of Charlotte, North Carolina. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, James Crisp.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm, Saturday, December 17, 2022, at Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel, 207 W. Main St., North Manchester, with Pastor J.P. Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester. Friends may call 12:30 – 2:00 pm Saturday, at the funeral home.
