James Melvin Herring, 85, of Warsaw, IN, formerly of Keystone, IN, passed away at 7:05 PM on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at Bridgewater Centre in Hartford City, IN. He was born on Thursday, April 13, 1933, in Van Buren, IN. Mr. Herring currently lived in Warsaw, IN, and had formerly lived in Keystone, In, and Ruskin, FL. The Herring family also had a home on Irish Lake in Kosciusko County, IN. for many years. He attended Chester Center High School. He was the former member and Fire Chief of the Chester Twp. Volunteer Fire Dept. and a member of the Indiana Volunteer Fireman’s Association. He was a member of the New Beginnings Church in Atwood, In. He retired in 1980 from General Motors (C.P.C.) in Marion as a General Foreman where he started work in 1956 as the 13th person to be hired. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Union and Sympathy Club. He was a former Wells County Sheriff Deputy, a member of the Red Cross-React- Insert and the Civil Defense in Wells & Blackford Counties, Montpelier Masonic Lodge #600 F&AM, and the Scottish Rite Valley of Ft. Wayne.
Loving Survivors Include his Daughter – Tina (Herring) Wooten, Sons – Larry (wife, Karen) Herring, Keystone, IN, Terry (wife, Jane Ann) Herring, Montpelier, IN, Sister – Carolyn Nelson, Warsaw, IN, Grandchildren -Melissa K. Borror, Mark Herring , Jillian Warner, Jordan Kovach, Brandon Karbach, & Mia Sindelar, and 10 Great Grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his Father – Paul Gerald Herring, Mother – Minnie (Furman) Herring, Son – Gary “Butch” Herring, Brother – Paul David Herring, IN, Sister – Katie Reff, IN, and Grandchildren – Matt Herring, & Todd Herring.
Family and friends may gather to share and remember at Walker & Glancy Funeral Home 109 W. Windsor St. Montpelier, IN. on Sunday, June 24, 2018 from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A Masonic Service will be held at 5:45 PM on Sunday, June 24, 2018.
A service to celebrate his life will be at Walker & Glancy Funeral Home at 6:00 PM on Sunday, June 24, 2018 with Pastor Steve Sutton officiating.
