James Ewing Adkins

After an extended illness, James Ewing Adkins, 81, Marion, went to be with the Lord at 3:17 p.m. on Sunday, January 21, 2018, in Marion General Hospital. He was born in Flemingsburg, Kentucky, on February 10, 1936, to the late Lovell and Jesse (DeBord) Adkins. On August 17, 1963, James married Christine Lusher, and she survives.

James was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in artillery during the Korean War. After his military service, he worked as a brick mason and then became the Branch Owner at Century 21 Real Estate. He later worked at Mutual Federal Savings as Vice President in the Lending Department for 16 years. James was a member of Grace Community Church and Masonic Lodge, and a life member of the Elks. He was also Past President of Marion School Board, Board of Realtors, and Shriners. James enjoyed golfing and playing cards at the Elks, and he also enjoyed traveling with Christine, especially out West.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Christine; two children, James Daniel (Beth) Adkins, Mission, Texas, and Angela (Kevin) Wright, Upland; six grandchildren, Caleb, AJ, and Katie Adkins, Gabrielle (Tyler) Smelser, Melanie Wright, and Ben Wright; one great-grandson, Levi Smelser; one brother, Roger (Jane) Adkins; one sister, Brenda (Eldon) Bowling; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive visitors from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with James’ funeral service beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, January 26, 2018, at Grace Community Church, 1810 E. Bradford Pike, Marion, IN. Rev. Dr. Tom Mansbarger will be officiating with burial taking place at 2 p.m. at Marion National Cemetery.
