Eugene Edward Schmalzried, 81, of North Manchester, Indiana, died at 5:28 pm, Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Parkview Wabash Hospital. He was born on July 5, 1942, in Wabash, Indiana, to Paul and Sarrah E. (Eads) Schmalzried.
Gene was a 1961 graduate of Laketon High School, and attened Manchester College. He married Brenda J. Woods at the Urbana Yoke Parish on August 25, 1984; she died August 3, 2009. Gene worked at Ford Meter Box in Wabash, retiring after 43 years. He was a member of the St. Peters United Church of Christ in Urbana and a former member of the Laketon Lions Club. Gene enjoyed listening to the radio, especially sports and music. He also enjoyed water skiing and going out to breakfast.
He is survived by his sister, Betty Heagy of North Manchester; nieces and nephew, Deborah Heagy of Chicago, Illinois, Rebecca (Gregory) Merkel of Indianapolis, Indiana, Michael (Brenda) Heagy and Melissa (Todd) Dierks, both of North Manchester; and several great nieces and nephews. Gene was also preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be 10:30 am, Saturday, March 9, 2024, at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 1241 Manchester Avenue, Wabash, with Pastor J.P. Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Laketon Cemetery, Laketon, Indiana. Friends may call 4-7 pm Friday, at the funeral home.
