Elizabeth Jane “Betty” Carey

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mother, Elizabeth Jane “Betty” Carey, who, after an extended illness, entered Heaven with her family at her side.  Mom was born to John Lloyd Webb and Lola Blanch (Nelson) Webb on September 3, 1936, in Wewanta, West Virginia.  Her own mother passed away when Mom was nine years old.  Two years later, her father married Rozella Crittendon, who was a kind stepmother and step-grandmother.

Mom married our father, Tennis McNabb “Bud” Carey, on June 9, 1956.  They lived in Cleveland, Ohio, briefly before moving to Marion, Indiana.  They raised five daughters and spent the remainder of their lives here in Grant County.

Mom was a founding member of the Healing Heart Church of God, where she was always an active and devoted member.  She sang in the choir, was in the Ladies Auxiliary, and took part in most church functions.  No potluck or picnic was complete without her ham salad sandwiches.  Mom’s faith guided her life and carried her through many difficult times, especially when her beloved Bud passed away in 2013.  Mom persevered, though, and remained active until her own health issues made it impossible for her to attend church.  Still, she prayed and read her Bible, and she took comfort in continuing to support the church.

Mom is survived by her daughters, Catherine (John) Zitzman of Palmer, Alaska; Debra Carey, Brenda Carey, Janet Carey, all of Marion; and Joyce (Kirk) Richards of Gas City.  She leaves behind three grandchildren: Jessica Lowe, Morgan (Travis Cunningham) Richards, and Kyle (Kathryn Shaneyfelt) Richards; and four great-grandchildren: Isaac Lowe, Jillian Lowe, Amelia Lowe, and Barrett Cunningham.  Dennie Webb, her younger brother, survives her as well.

Mom is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews, and her ability to remember all their names and birthdays never ceased to amaze others.

Besides her parents and our dad, Mom was preceded in death by her brothers, Donald Webb, Arthur Webb, and John Lloyd Webb, Jr., and by her infant sister, Lola Blanch Webb.  She was also preceded in death by her stepbrothers, Gerald Crittendon, Kyle Crittendon, and her stepsister, Jean Crittendon Rushden.

The family will receive visitors from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.

On Friday, June 30, 2023, a funeral service to celebrate Betty’s life will begin at 11:30 am.  Pastor Delmar Fenwick will be officiating with burial taking place at Gardens of Memory.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Healing Heart Church of God, 2701 S. Western Ave., Marion, IN 46953.
