David B. Salter

David B. Salter, age 82 of Marion passed away Saturday, January 2, 2021 surrounded by his family after a 30 year battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

David was born July 28, 1938 in Marion, Indiana the son of the late Emery and Mary “Jib” (Hardin) Salter.  He married Betty Kastetter on September 11, 1960, and she survives.   They just celebrated 60 years together.

After he graduated high school, he attended Earlham College where he was a walk on football player.  He also attended Indiana University at Kokomo, Indiana Wesleyan University and then Hobart Welding School.  He was a pipefitter and plumber for over 50 years for the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 440 and Honeywell Inc. of Indianapolis.  He was also the original founder and owner of the Fireplace Shoppe in Marion for 12 years.  After his retirement, he and Betty enjoyed 20 winters spending time in the Enchanting Shores of Naples, Florida. 

David was an avid outdoorsman and sports enthusiast.  He loved anything with a ball especially IU Basketball and playing with his kids and the neighborhood kids every day. He loved coaching the Boys Club and the PAL Club kids for many years.  He was a season ticket holder for the Marion Giants Basketball.   David enjoyed fast-pitch baseball, bowling, basketball, and playing golf.  David introduced mushball to Grant County and was a member of the Jaycees. 

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Salter of Marion; a son, John (Kristy) Salter of Marion; a daughter, Kathryn (Matthew) Patterson of Marion; a brother, Mike Salter of Gas City; 4 grandchildren, Angela Salter, Trey Salter, Johnathon Salter and Zoey Salter; and 3 great-grandchildren, Payton Cotton, Daniel Cotton and Aria Salter.

Friends and family may call from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 W. Kem Road, Marion, Indiana.  Funeral Services will begin at 5:00 p.m. with Reverend Tom Mansbarger officiating.  Cremation will take place following funeral services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Y.M.C.A. of Grant County, 123 Sutter Way, Marion, Indiana 46952 for the Parkinson’s Rock Steady Boxing Program.
