D. Duain “Dewey” Fanning Jr., age 90, of Huntington, died at 4:00 a.m. Friday, November 30, 2018 at his home.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 West Park Drive, Huntington, Indiana. Funeral services will immediately follow at 12 p.m. Tuesday at Bailey-Love Mortuary with Rev. Brooks Fetters officiating. Entombment will be in the Fanning Mausoleum in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Huntington.

Preferred memorials are to Huntington County Humane Society, Helping Paws Pet Haven, or Salvation Army, in care of Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 West Park Drive, Huntington, Indiana, 46750.

Dewey was born on February 13, 1928 in Huntington, the son of Dwight Duain and Mary (Barwick) Fanning. He graduated from Huntington High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from Indiana University, Bloomington, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He married Joanna L. Barr on June 28, 1948 in Rochester. From 1948-1980, Dewey was the owner of Fanning Furniture Co. in Huntington. He owned 711 Travel Center in Huntington from 1980-2008. He was a member and past president of Huntington Rotary Club, during which time he was a delegate to the International Convention in Nice, France; his wife and four children accompanied him for a three-week tour of Europe before the meeting. He was Vice President of Huntington Chamber of Commerce and a member and past president of the Cosmopolitan Club. He was the founder and first president of the Huntington Civic Music Association. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Huntington where he was a high school Sunday school teacher. He and his wife loved to travel and had visited 47 states and 50 countries on five continents. Dewey was an avid reader and sailor and kept a sailboat on Lake Wawasee for many years. He sailed in the Southern Ocean Racing Conference from St. Petersburg, Florida to Fort Lauderdale in 1971.

Survivors include his wife of over 70 years, Joanna L. Fanning of Huntington, sons Robert (Nancy) Fanning of Syracuse, Indiana and Peter (Laura) Fanning of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California, a daughter, Polly (Ron) Heard of Ortonville, Michigan, a sister, Joyce Chapman of Goshen, five grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Rebecca Black.
