Clyde Timmons Gunn

Clyde Timmons Gunn passed away peacefully on Monday, August 14, 2023, at the age of 90.  He was born in Van Buren, Indiana, on June 3, 1933, to Charles and Hazel Gunn.  He was one of seven children.  He graduated from Van Buren High School in 1951.  After high school, he joined the United States Navy, proudly serving during the Korean War.

He was united in marriage to Phylis Ann Cox, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Cox of Van Buren, Indiana, on December 24, 1953, in the Kalauea Military Camp Chapel, Hawaii National Park, Hawaii.  Upon honorable discharge from the Navy on September 27, 1959, Clyde dedicated his life to the Lord Jesus Christ and was ordained as an Elder in the Church of the Nazarene on June 29, 1967.  He served as a pastor for a variety of churches throughout Northeastern Indiana and Michigan.  These included Upland, Muncie, Pennville, Shipshewana, Warren, Kokomo, Montpelier, and Gas City, Indiana.  He also pastored at Battle Creek, Michigan, and often was an interim pastor for various churches in the Northeast Indiana district for the Church of the Nazarene.  Upon moving to central Indiana after the passing of his wife, he continued to offer comfort and care to the residents of the communities he lived in until his passing, including Park Square (Avon, Indiana) and Brownsburg Meadows Nursing Home (Brownsburg, Indiana).

He served in the church for over 65 years and leaves behind a legacy of believers who felt called to be the hands of God throughout their communities as a result of his deep passion for truth and helping others.

In 2012, Clyde and his wife, Phylis, received the Generational Leadership Award from the Northeastern Indiana District Church of the Nazarene, in recognition of his extensive pastoral service.  He received several other awards throughout his tenure as a pastor.

Clyde enjoyed fishing, golfing, and spending time with friends and family.  He never met a stranger and always made everyone who spoke with him feel like family.  He was a staunch supporter of the IU basketball team and the Cubs baseball team.  And, while he wore socks with the logos of his favorite teams, he greatly enjoyed delighting his grandchildren, friends, and family with his collection of brightly-colored and patterned socks.

The Navy instilled in Clyde a sense of joy for wandering and adventuring to new places.  However, no matter where his vacations took him, his heart always remained with his family.  He always had open arms to welcome his family and to counsel them through any challenge.

Clyde is survived by his children: Gary (Debra) Gunn of Beaverville, IL; Cathy (Dr. Thomas) Davis of Pittsboro, IN; Pamela (Jeff) Cloud of Brighton, CO; Sherri (David) Mason of Ceresco, MI; and Terry (Diane) Gunn of Greenwood, IN; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his sister, Catherine Longshore, of Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phylis; parents, Charles (Hazel) Gunn; and siblings, James Gunn, JoAnn Strahm, Virginia Hart, Mary Mosley, and Robert Gunn.
