City Awarded record $1.5 Million Community Crossing Grant


Marion, IN – The City of Marion has been awarded a record 1.5 million dollar
Community Crossing Matching Grant from the Indiana Department of Transportation.
In a letter dated April 10th, 2024, Governor Eric Holcomb and INDOT Commissioner Michael
Smith signed the preliminary approval for funding to match the City’s commitment to improve
the infrastructure within the City of Marion.
The matching grant is the largest the City of Marion has received from INDOT.
The projected cost for the 2024 roads and streets project is 3 million dollars.
Mayor Ronald Morrell, Jr. expressed excitement to be able to improve infrastructure
throughout the city with the 50/50 matching grant. “We are honored by INDOT’s decision to
allocate the maximum grant amount to our city. This achievement reflects the dedicated
collaboration between the City Council and the Administration, emphasizing our shared
commitment to enhancing both road infrastructure and pedestrian pathways. This grant
represents a pivotal opportunity for our city, marking our inaugural endeavor into substantial
sidewalk renovations. I extend my gratitude to Mike Graft, our esteemed City Engineer, whose
diligent efforts were instrumental in securing this grant.”
Within the next few weeks, an official award letter will be presented from INDOT.
The preliminary letter to the Mayor stated, “The state of Indiana looks forward to partnering
with all Hoosier communities, both urban and rural, to invest in road and bridge infrastructure
projects. Improvement to local roads and bridges will bring about economic development,
create jobs, and strengthen local transportation networks for all of Indiana.”
