Audrey E. Smith, 92, Marion, went to be with the Lord at 4:20 p.m. on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, at Wesleyan Health Care and Rehab in Marion. She was born in South Bend on August 28, 1926, to the late Robert Douglas Arrington and Fern I. (Stoner) Sontchi. On July 19, 1947, she married her husband, Arthur Smith, Jr., and they shared nearly 53 years together before he passed away on January 3, 2000.
Audrey was a graduate of Mishawaka High School and St. Joe College, where she received her bachelor’s degree in nursing. She then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a nurse cadet. Following her military service, she was employed at Owens-Illinois as their safety director/nurse before finishing her career at the Marion VA Medical Center as a nurse. She truly loved helping others, and her nursing career allowed her to fulfill that great desire to serve and give back to others.
Some of her favorite hobbies included reading, crafting, and decorating her house. Audrey will also be known for being a history buff, for how much she loved to socialize, and the wonderful times that she had visiting with friends.
She will be missed by her children: David Bruce Smith, Houston, TX; Janice May Martin, Gas City; Joan (Steven) Tomlin, Fairmount; and Carol (Roy) Woodbury, Mesa, AZ; 8 grandchildren: Aaron, Chad, Kristy, Amy, Austin, Mike, Ben, and Rachel; and 7 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband, Arthur; step-brother, Carl Sontchi; and son-in-law, Fred Martin.
The family will have a committal service for Audrey at Grant Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel.
Arrangements are entrusted to Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St., Gas City, IN.
