Alta M. Wilson

Alta M. Wilson, 92, Marion, passed away in Marion General Hospital at 9:07 a.m. on Friday, June 8, 2018.  She was born in Marion on September 23, 1925, and was the daughter of the late Leonard and Georgia (Dodson) Mathews.  Alta married Cornelius Wilson, who preceded her in death on April 1, 1999.

A lifelong resident of Marion, Alta attended Marion Community Schools.  After marrying Cornelius in 1944, she was primarily a homemaker throughout her life.  She did work part-time, though, in the cafeterias with both Marion Community Schools and Indiana Wesleyan University.  Alta was a very energetic lady who enjoyed a variety of activities including traveling, bowling, collecting stuffed animals, riding bicycles, and doing yard work.  She was a life member of Allen Temple, where she was actively involved singing in the choir and ushering.

She is survived by her daughters, Berdina Bobson, Marion, Bubbles McGregory, Indianapolis, and Nadine (Henry L., Jr.) Smith, Marion; grandchildren, Anthony (Lori) Bobson, Russell D. Bobson, II, Kevin T. (Jenell) Bobson, Henry L. (Kesha) Smith, III, Herbert (Tina) Jackson, III, Alta (Shawn) Wilson, Eric (Amanda) Wilson, Felicia Wilson, Preston (Olukemi) Wilson, Kimberly Wilson, and Rick (Terrele) Wilson; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Richard Wilson; granddaughter, Dr. Monica Smith; grandson, Alonzo (Petie) Browner, III; great-grandson, Herbert Jackson, IV; sisters, Irene Lake and Evelyn Jones; son-in-law, Russell Bobson; and sister-in-law, Alma Wilson.

At the family’s request, a private service will be held at Grant Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, 1606 W. 26th St., Marion, IN.  Rev. Allen McClendon and Rev. Shonda Nicole Gladden will be officiating with burial following at Grant Memorial Park.

Arrangements are entrusted to Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.

The family wishes to thank the personnel who helped out Alta in the Emergency Room and Critical Care, along with Dr. Miller and Able Hands.
