Peru man arrested after dispute

MIAMI COUNTY, IN – Sunday, around 11:30 p.m., ISP Trooper Baldwin, along with other troopers from the Peru District and deputies from the Miami County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a man with a gun that was threatening to cause harm to his neighbors. This incident occurred on George Street in Peru, IN.

A preliminary investigation by Trooper Baldwin revealed that a subject, later identified to be James Brown, got into a verbal altercation with his neighbor. During the verbal altercation, Brown began to approach his neighbor and pulled a firearm. After Brown pulled the firearm, the neighbor attempted to gain control of it but was unable to. 

Shortly after, officers arrived on the scene and located Brown, who matched the description of the male with the firearm. Officers began to give Brown verbal commands, which Brown did not obey. An officer on the scene deployed their taser, which allowed other officers to safely take Brown into custody. After Brown was taken into custody, officers on the scene located suspected marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and bullets on his person. 

During the course of the investigation, Trooper Baldwin was granted a search warrant for Brown’s motorcycle, where he located a firearm.

Brown was later transported to Miami County Jail.

  1. Battery – Committed with a Deadly Weapon – Level 5 Felony
  2. Pointing a Firearm – Level 6 Felony
  3. Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon – Level 6 Felony
  4. Possession of a Firearm by a Domestic Batterer – Class A Misdemeanor
  5. Resisting Law Enforcement – Class A Misdemeanor
  6. Public Intoxication – Class B Misdemeanor
  7. Disorderly Conduct – Class B Misdemeanor
  8. Possession of Marijuana – Class B Misdemeanor
  9. Possession of Paraphernalia -Class C Misdemeanor

Trooper Baldwin was assisted on the scene by other troopers from the Peru Post, Miami County Sheriff’s Office, Bunker Hill Police Department, and Lutheran EMS.
