Multiple Arrests made Wednesday Evening in Peru

MIAMI COUNTY, Ind. – On May 9thh, at approximately 5:18pm, Miami County Central Dispatch advised of a male holding a female against her will in the 50 block of South Chestnut Street in Peru.  Dispatch further advised that the caller was told that the male had a firearm.  As initial officers arrived they began to speak to the male, Alex Burrus, through an open window.  Mr. Burrus made several comments to include the fact the female was not leaving and officers were not coming in the residence.  Mr. Burrus was irate and yelled at officers.  He also made the comment that the police were going to have to kill him and there was no other way.  As officers were trying to talk to Mr. Burrus, others who know him were trying to make their way to the residence or get close to the residence.  One subject, Willean Bowen, made contact with an officer and was placed in handcuffs, as she would not obey multiple commands to stay back.   Another female, Shirley Morens, began screaming to Mr. Burrus, “Don’t come outside Alex, stay in there.”  Ms. Morens continued to hinder and be disorderly as a large amount of bystanders watched from across the street.  While officers continued to speak with Mr. Burrus, other officers began to arrive and set up a perimeter around the residence.  As officers were setting up the perimeter they were being argued with by several bystanders about having to get back.  Several people who were outside the residence had cell phone recording the incident.  They further were making contact with Mr. Burrus and encouraging him to not come out of the residence.  Bystanders were also giving Mr. Burrus information about what was happening outside the residence.  Mr. Burrus would not answer his phone for law enforcement.  Officers continued to negotiate with Mr. Burrus through an open window.   At 6:21pm, he allowed the female to leave the residence.  Negotiations continued until he peacefully exited the residence at 6:31pm.  “This situation was tense and unstable from the time the call came into dispatch.  However, bystanders made the situation worse by putting the female’s safety in jeopardy as well as our officers,” said Chief Mike Meeks.   “I cannot commend our officers enough for the peaceful and safe ending,” said Meeks.  Alex Burrus, 24 of Peru, was arrested for Criminal Confinement.  Shirley Morens, 19 of Peru, was arrested for Disorderly Conduct and Obstruction of Justice.  Willean Bowen, 45 of Peru, was arrested for Battery on a Police Officer and Disorderly Conduct.  Also assisting at the scene were officers from the Miami County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana State Police.
