The Wabash County Commissioners reduced their trash and recycling services costs by more than $7,000. On Monday morning, County Coordinator Jim Dils met with representatives from Republic Services about the county government’s trash removal and recycling service, and negotiated a new three-year agreement for four containers used by the county. The new agreement reduces the rate by more than $7,000 per year, and is effective as of signing on Monday, Sept. 12.

“It had not been reviewed for a couple years, and it was time to do that,” Dils said.

“I think between that and the Highway Department, it’ll save about $7,500 for the four containers.”

Dils said the new yearly cost is $7,129.20.

Additionally, Dils informed the commissioners that County Attorney Steve Downs and H.J. Umbaugh negotiated a wording change on the county’s contract with the company for their services regarding financing the new jail project. The clarification ensures that Umbaugh can provide the needed services for the quoted price of $30,000. The commissioners also approved the renewal of a contract with Tyco Simplex for the courthouse’s fire suppression system.

“It’s a three year price fix, but the increase for the next three years will be a 9.7 percent increase from where it’s been for the last three years,” Dils said.

The increase amounts to about $160 per year, for a total of $1,804.57 per year.

In other news, Sheriff Bob Land reported the week’s jail numbers as 82 being held in the Wabash County facility with 46 Wabash County inmates held in Miami County and six in Elkhart County. The Wabash facility peaked at 90 inmates, and the Sheriff’s Department transferred two inmates to the Department of Corrections.
