June First Friday to celebrate Wabash Cultural District

WABASH, IN—June’s First Friday will pay tribute to the rich arts and culture that runs deep throughout the Wabash Cultural District. The 2.5 mile district is filled with cultural assets such as a world-class performing arts center, miles of community bike trails, numerous public art pieces, new housing developments and boutiques. Celebrating its 3-year anniversary since the 2021 designation, the Wabash Cultural District will be brimming with festive arts and culture experiences, family-friendly activities, local shopping and more during the event.

June First Friday will feature the return of a fan-favorite, Paint the Plow, an annual hands-on art experience for the whole family to enjoy. Downtown Wabash, Inc. is thrilled to partner with the City of Wabash Street Department to offer this years-long tradition on Miami Street.

“I remember taking my daughters when Paint the Plow first started,” recalls Justin Adams, with the City of Wabash Street Department. “They loved painting their names, or painting a butterfly, and being able to see that on their dad’s truck throughout the year. It was such a neat thing for them.”

During Paint the Plow, families and children of all ages are invited to decorate the plow trucks used by the City of Wabash Street Department. This provides a fun opportunity for community members to see their artwork in action.

“I know the kids really enjoy this event, but sometimes I feel like the parents enjoy it a little more,” says Adams. “It’s a great feeling when a car pulls up to us while we are out working and it’s a parent wanting to show their child’s artwork to them.”

Miami Street will close for the first time in 2024 during June’s First Friday, welcoming the arrival of vendor festivities. Miami Street will feature several community vendor booths hosting various activities, giveaways and information through October’s First Friday.

Following a successful premiere, Food Truck Plaza will return for June First Friday. Food Truck Plaza is a designated space for visitors to effortlessly access a diverse array of food offerings to enjoy amidst a lively outdoor atmosphere. Centered in the heart of downtown, the plaza will feature live music and eight to nine food trucks at Veterans Plaza.

First Friday goers are also encouraged to embark on a shopping spree, enjoy delicious dining and discover a variety of entertainment options in downtown. Numerous downtown businesses will offer First Friday specials for shoppers to take advantage of.

“This event is so vibrant and energetic each year,” says Downtown Wabash, Inc. Downtown Coordinator, Carly Hawkins. “The community really has fun with this one, and I can honestly say it is my favorite First Friday of the year.”
