City of Peru Mayor Miles Hewitt Addresses COVID-19

This from City of Peru Mayor Miles Hewitt:

PERU, IN- After a lengthy conversation with Debra Close, the CEO of Dukes Memorial Hospital, I, Mayor Miles Hewitt, thought I would make the citizens of Peru aware of our conversation on the COVID – 19 Virus:
1. If you feel sick, stay home and do not go to work. Contact your medical provider.
2. If your children are sick, keep them home and contact your medical provider
3. If someone in your household has tested positive for the Coronavirus, keep the entire household at home. Do not go to work.
4. If you are an older person and feel OK, please stay home and away from other people.
5. If you are a person with underlying health conditions that will put you at increased risk, please stay home and away from other people.
At the time of this information there has only been 1 confirmed case of the COVID-19 Virus in Miami County, however many more are predicted.
The only way to get a test for the virus is to call your doctor. He/she will evaluate your symptoms and determine if a test is necessary, and if it is, he/she will then place an order with Dukes and instruct you to go there. Dukes will meet you outside the Emergency Room Door to do the test. If you are too ill to be taken to the hospital via private transportation, then call 911 and an ambulance will be dispatched to pick you up and transport you. For the most up to date information regarding Dukes Hospital’s preparedness, visit LuthernHealth.net or call 260-435-5050.
If you need more information on the COVID-19 Virus, contact Center For Disease Control and Prevention. Just google CDC and that will take you to a wealth of information that will be able to answer any questions you have; this is very user friendly.
The COVID-19 Virus has put a strain on everyone in the world. I know as a citizen of Peru we will all be able to work together and see this through. The great people of Peru have pulled together during past emergencies and this will be no different.
As the Mayor of Peru I am asking all the citizens of Peru to support Governor Holcomb in his stay at home order to fight the spread of the COVID-19 Virus. Working together we will prevail. Again, I want to warn all citizens of Peru to beware of the scammers who are trying to intimidate you by threatening to have you arrested and are using other high pressure tactics just to get your money.
Peru Utilities has adopted a policy where no utilities will be shut off at this time, however your monthly bill may list a shut off date. You will be responsible for the utilities used, but the Utilities will work with you after the threat of the COVID-19 Virus has passed.
All garbage pickup will continue as scheduled. If you have any questions or concerns please call my office 765-472-2400 and your call will be returned in a timely manner.                                                                                 Thank you,                                                                                  Mayor Miles Hewitt
