Blair Pointe Student Wins 2019 statewide Letters About Literature competition

Indianapolis – The Indiana Center for the Book, a program of the Indiana State Library, is pleased to announce the winners of the 2019 statewide Letters About Literature competition. Level I winners included Miguel Sebastian of Blair Pointe Elementary in Peru, first place in the fourth through sixth grade category. Over 1,000 students from 32 counties in Indiana participated in this year’s competition. Each student wrote a personal letter to an author, living or deceased, explaining how his or her work changed their view of the world or of themselves. The first place winner in each level advances to the national contest. In a ceremony that took place on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at the Indiana State Library, The Indiana Center for the Book awarded cash prizes to the first, second and third place students, as well as to semifinalists. Over 200 students and family members attended the ceremony, headlined by Indiana authors A’Lelia Bundles and Professor Watermelon. Bundles, an award-winning journalist, is the great-great-granddaughter of Madam C. J. Walker and has authored four books about Walker. Letters About Literature is a reading and writing promotion program of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, presented in partnership with Dollar General. Indiana’s competition is supported by the James and Madeleine McMullan Family Foundation and the Indiana State Library Foundation.
