Arrests made in Marion shooting

MARION, IN- On July 22, 2023 at approximately 11:18 am, officers of the Marion Police Department responded to the area of 2800 block of South Brownlee for a shooting. Officers arrived at the scene and located the victim (Justin Reid). The victim stated that he was changing the tire to his vehicle, when a black in color Chrysler sedan pulled up next to him. The victim stated that three people exited the sedan and two of the subjects pulled handguns and started shooting at him. The victim retreated behind his vehicle for safety. The victim then returned fire at the suspects.
A resident at 2815 S Brownlee heard the gun shots and seen on his security camera that his friend was
being shot at. The resident the retrieved his gun and fired one round at the suspect vehicle.
Police then were notified that a gunshot victim was at Marion Health for treatment. Police found a 17
year old male suffering from a non-life threatening gun shot wound. The 17 year old matched the
description of one of the suspect shooters in this case. The 17 year old was treated for his injuries and
released to police custody. The 17 year old was transported to a juvenile detention facility where they
are being held on the charge of Conspiracy to commit murder a level 1 felony, and criminal recklessness
with a deadly weapon a level 5 felony.
The Marion Police Department was also able to identify the other two suspects in this case and warrant
for their arrests have been obtained.
Jaikell Johnson (aka Capone Johnson) age 21, date of birth 3-22-2002 and Ronald Payton age 21, date of
birth 6-03-2002.
Johnson and Payton have outstanding warrants for Attempted Murder, Conspiracy to commit murder,
and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.
Investigators received information that Jaikell Johnson had obtained treatment for a gun shot wound in
Anderson, Indiana and had left the hospital before officers could contact him.
No charges were filed on Justin Reid or the resident of 2815 S Brownlee as they acted in self-defense.
