Armed Robbery Suspect Found Dead and Now Identified

UPDATE: 7-15-2016 at approximately 7:04 am, the suspect of the Armed Robbery/Shooting was found deceased in the wooded area behind McDonald’s Restaurant. *** The suspect has been identified as . On July 14, 2016 at approximately 9:56 pm, Marion Police responded to an armed robbery at McDonalds Restaurant, located at 2006 S. Western Ave. Upon officer’s arrival to the restaurant, the suspect exited the restaurant and fled in a northwest direction through the parking lot. As the suspect attempted to flee the parking lot – Police released a K9 unit. The K9 was able to make contact with the suspect, and bit the suspect at least twice. At this time the suspect fired his weapon at the K9 striking it in the left leg. Officers on scene exchanged gunfire with the suspect, whom continued on into the wooded area. Responding officers set a perimeter in order to confine the suspect to the wooded area.
A helicopter was brought in for the use of a thermal tracking device. The device was able to identity two stationary objects. At this time Emergency Response Teams from the Grant Co. Sheriff’s Department and Marion Police Department entered the wooded area to identify the objects. The objects were found to be non-human.

The suspect was described as:
A light skinned black male, between 5’10 and 6’02, thin build, short hair/curly, wearing a half mask covering his face up to his nose, gray hooded sweatshirt w/hood up, gloves, dark pants and dark shoes

• The suspect obtained an undetermined amount of currency during the robbery.

Case Status:
• K9 Unit (Geronimo) received medical treatment and sustained a flesh wound to the left leg
• No employees of McDonalds, or customers of the restaurant were injured
• No law enforcement officers were injured

An autopsy will be performed over the weekend to determine the cause of death.
