Two Sixth Grade Students Organize Pennies for Playground Fundraiser

WABASH COUNTY, Ind. – Like many schools in Wabash County, Sharp Creek Elementary recently participated in the Pennies for Playground fundraiser to raise money for the allinclusive playground in Wabash.  Two sixth grade students, Cheyenne Miracle and Madeline Moore, organized the fundraiser for Sharp Creek as part of a Genius Hour project.  The students had partnered together and wanted to raise money to help the community.  When they took their idea to Principal Jay Snyder, he suggested they take charge of the Pennies for Playground project.

The girls were eager to get started.   They passed out jars for each homeroom class to decorate and gave out prizes for the best decorated jar. Madeline states, “The jar decorating contest was fun because it was fun to see how the jars were uniquely decorated.” The fundraiser lasted for two weeks.  Cheyenne and Madeline used their recess time to collect and count change. The girls would make announcements throughout the contest letting the student body know which class was in the lead. Their excitement and enthusiasm for this project spurred the students to give generously.  As a result, Sharp Creek was able to raise $1,519.56for the playground.  These two students exemplify MSD’s tagline:  Dream Big and Work Hard!
