Two Airlifted Following Two Vehicle Crash on I-69 in Huntington County

(Huntington County, IN)-The Indiana State Police is investigating a two vehicle crash which occurred this morning on I-69, just north of the 281 mile marker, approximately five miles south of the Markle exit.

Preliminary investigation by Master Trooper Jason Ward indicates that at approximately 8:50 a.m., a 2000 Dodge Stratus driven by 28 year old Aaron M. Wiegand of Fort Wayne was traveling southbound on I-69 when, for an unknown reason, it traveled into the center median.  The Stratus then spun around before entering the northbound lanes.

The Stratus was then struck on the driver’s side by a 2011 GMC Acadia which was driven by 55 year old Candee M. Smith of Warren.  The Stratus came to a rest in the right, northbound lane while the Acadia traveled off the roadway and down into a ditch where it rolled completely over before coming to a final rest.

Smith’s passenger, 60 year old Walter W. Smith of Warren and Wiegand were flown to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne by Samaritan Air Ambulance.  Both are currently listed in critical condition.  Candee Smith was transported by Parkview EMS to Parkview Regional Medical Center and she is in stable condition.

As a result of the crash, both northbound lanes of I-69 were closed for about three hours while crews worked to conduct their investigation and clear the roadway of the Stratus and other debris.  This investigation is ongoing and no further information is available at this time.

Ward was assisted by the Huntington County Sheriff Department, Huntington County EMA, Parkview Huntington EMS, Parkview Samaritan, Markle Fire Department, Warren Fire Department and the Warren Police Department.
