Emergency crews were called around 10 p.m. to the interstate near mile marker 295, about one mile north of the Markle exit.
Huntington County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Ron Boxell said a semi was traveling south when the driver began experiencing some type of braking issue. A second semi following behind attempted to swerve and miss the semi but clipped part of the trailer.
Boxell said the two semis pulled over onto the shoulder and the second driver walked up to the first semi. Boxell said that’s when a third semi slammed into the back of the second semi and crashed into a ditch.
No one was hurt.
Boxell said the third semi was carrying boxes of frozen snow crab that spilled out into the ditch and a nearby field.
A fourth semi hit several pieces of debris from the crash and suffered damage to the front of the semi. That driver also was not hurt.
Traffic was slow for about a mile heading into the crash area, but emergency crews were able to keep the left lane open to traffic.
Wrecker trucks were expected to move the damaged semis overnight.
The crash is under investigation.
