This from the Pharos Tribune: CASS COUNTY, IN- What started out as a routine tailgating traffic stop ended with officers finding more than 2 grams of heroin.
Following a traffic tip from the Indiana State Police, Dep. Ryan Preston of the Cass County Sheriff’s Department stopped a black Chevrolet Malibu in the 400 block of South Main Street in Walton at approximately 12:59 p.m. Thursday.
As he began talking with the driver, Whitney Nicole Dyer, 32, of Logansport, his K9, Zeno, detected a “presence of illegal narcotics emitting from the vehicle.”
Upon a search of the vehicle, officers found a crystal-like substance on the front driver’s seat, which presumptively tested as possible methamphetamine, according to the probable cause affidavit. Officers also found a small infant sitting in a car seat in the rear of the vehicle.
Dyer was then transported and booked into the Cass County Jail. At this time, a “clear, plastic corner baggy” was found on her person, the report stated. The weight of the alleged heroin was 2.3 grams.
After being read her Miranda rights, Dyer told officers that she had met with a Kokomo man who sold her the drugs. She further claimed that she was going to take the heroin to her residence and cut it with Benadryl so she could re-sell the drugs for a profit.
She had picked up money from two other people for the purchase of the heroin, she told officers, adding that she would “buy heroin from several different people and then sell it to others in smaller amounts.”
Because of the large quantity of heroin, Dyer faces a Level 4 felony charge of dealing heroin as well as a Level 5 felony charge of possession of heroin.
She also faces a Level 6 felony offense of child neglect.
While the Department of Child Services was contacted, the infant boy was put in custody of his grandmother.
Dyer’s probable cause hearing was held in Cass Superior Court 2 on Monday. Judge Lisa Swaim set bond at $5,000 cash or $25,000 surety. Dyer remains behind bars.
Her initial hearing has been set for 8 a.m. Tuesday in Cass Superior Court 2.
Dyer has been in and out of the Cass County court system on drug-related charges since 2015.
