PERU, Ind. – Smithfield Foods’ Peru facility will conduct a hazardous materials drill in conjunction with local authorities on Tuesday, Sept. 19, from 9 a.m. to noon. Smithfield Foods is located at 3311 South State Road 19, Peru. The drill scenario will simulate ammonia release procedures including an evacuation and emergency shutdown. Smithfield Foods’ Peru facility, Emergency Management Agency, Peru Fire Department, Grissom Air Force Base, Dukes Hospital, Peru Community Schools and Maconaquah School Corporation are all a part of this drill. Citizens are to be aware they may hear loud sirens and smoke may be visible. No road closures are expected as a result of the drill. In the event of severe weather, the drill will be rescheduled to Tuesday, Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to noon.
