SILVER LAKE — A Silver Lake woman was arrested after she gave birth to a baby who tested positive for both methamphetamine and opiates.
Cheyenne Pauline Miller, 25, 108 S. Poplar St., Silver Lake, is being charged with neglect of a dependant causing serious bodily injury, a level 3 felony.

Miller first discovered she was pregnant on Jan. 6 when she was admitted to the hospital with abdominal pain. A friend of Miller told hospital staff that Miller stated she was going to kill her baby and that Miller had a history of injecting drugs into her body. Because of these statements, Miller was transferred for treatment of substance abuse and pregnancy. She was released on Jan. 9.

On Feb. 19, Miller was diagnosed with a displaced placenta and the baby was delivered cesarean at 25 weeks at DuPont Hospital in Fort Wayne. The baby girl and Miller both tested positive for methamphetamine and opiates.

Opiates and methamphetamine stay in the bloodstream for a short period of time which indicates that Miller used these drugs after it was confirmed she was pregnant on Jan. 6.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, Ronald Meade, 67, is the father of the child. Family members told an employee with Child Protective Services that Meade exchanges drugs and money with Miller for sexual favors.

Miller was ordered to appear in court on March 1 for a custody hearing. The court took no action because Miller appeared to be high on some type of drug during the hearing.

Child Protective Services has custody of the child because of the positive drug test.
