Quick Work by Huntington Sheriff’s Department Prevents Dangerous Situation

HUNTINGTON COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA 21) – Deputies with the Huntington County Sheriff’s Department helped stop what could have been a dangerous situation Wednesday afternoon.

Police received a call of a man at the intersection of State Road 9 and 37 on a report that a man was walking in the middle of the road carrying a gun. The suspect was later identified as 36-year old Daniel Boatright of Peoria Illinois.

When officers arrived, they shut down the road in both directions. That is when police say Boatright began walking towards backed up traffic, and at one point, pointed the gun in the direction of waiting cars.

It was then that Chief Deputy Chris Newton ran into Boatright with his vehicle, causing the man to tumble. As police approached the suspect, police say he put the gun to his head and fired but the gun had jammed. That is when officers jumped in and quickly apprehended him.

Police arrested the man and preliminarily charged him with several charges including two counts of pointing a firearm, resisting law enforcement with a deadly weapon, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.
