Peru Man with a list of Felony Charges has Escaped

This from the Kokomo Tribune:

HOWARD COUNTY, IN- A Peru man being held in the Howard County jail on a list of felony charges is now facing a count of escape after court security said he bolted from the downtown courthouse while still in shackles and was quickly found hiding in the backseat of a parked car. Billy D. Humphrey, 28, is being held in the Howard County Criminal Justice Center without bond. Online court records indicate Humphrey had a sentencing scheduled in Howard Superior Court I at 9 a.m. May 29. About a half-hour prior to the scheduled time of the hearing, a transport officer advised via radio that Humphrey made a run for it while being transported into the courthouse. Howard County Sheriff Steve Rogers said Humphrey was one of several inmates being transferred at that time. Initially, according to court documents, transport officers were unable to confirm which inmate had made a run for it, only stating to be on the lookout of an inmate wearing “a blue jump suit, handcuffed, shackled, last seen running west along Buckeye Street.” Additionally, he was spotted on courthouse security cameras. Authorities began to search the area, with one courthouse security deputy advising he began looking through Dumpsters across the street. After coming up empty-handed there, the deputy started down the alley leading to the Subway restaurant on North Washington Street. That’s where the deputy noted a car with the back windows rolled down, according to court documents. The deputy said he saw Humphrey lying down in the backseat of the car. Several officers then converged on the area, and Humphrey was taken back into custody, according to documents. Rogers said the ordeal lasted “a matter of minutes.” He also said the department reviews incidents like this in an effort to improve in areas when possible. Humphrey was taken back to the courthouse, according to documents, to his hearing, which was a sentencing for two separate warrants. One was for auto theft and criminal mischief and the other was for auto theft and possession of meth. Online court records indicate Humphrey, who was to be presented a plea deal, was denied the plea and sent back into custody without bond. He has an appearance in court scheduled for August.
