PERU, Ind. – A Peru man arrested on a disorderly conduct charge had to be placed in leg shackles and later allegedly headbutted the walls of a police car and a Miami County Jail cell, according to Peru police. 29 year old Robert Christopher faces charges of resisting law enforcement, a class A misdemeanor, disorderly conduct, a class B misdemeanor, public intoxication, a class B misdemeanor, possession of paraphernalia, a class C misdemeanor and possession of a hypodermic syringe, a level 6 felony, according to a Peru police probable cause affidavit. The charges stem from an incident that began about 7:21 p.m., on Saturday, April 22 when Peru police were dispatched to an apartment complex regarding a physical altercation.

While speaking to tenants involved in the altercation, police say that Christopher, who was several apartments down the hallway, began talking in a loud manner and was given a disorderly conduct warning. He was informed that he would go to jail if he continued to disturb the other residents of the apartment building, according to the affidavit.

As the officer returned to his vehicle, he said he observed Christopher walking unsteadily in the direction of his patrol car and began yelling an expletive several times, the affidavit said.

Christopher was arrested and while searching him, police found two syringes, a small metal pipe and a cigarette pack that contained a green and brown plant-like substance, according to the affidavit.

“The plant-like substance did not smell like marijuana and will be sent to the state lab for testing,” wrote Peru Officer Colten Pitner in the affidavit.

As he was escorted to the patrol vehicle, police say Christopher began yelling and tried to resist being placed in the vehicle. While police photographed the items that they allegedly found on Christopher, “he began to headbutt the metal cage and window of my vehicle,” wrote Pitner.

Police then placed leg shackles on him to keep his legs detained, the affidavit said.

Once back in the vehicle, Christopher lay on his back and began kicking the rear passenger side window of the police vehicle, according to Pitner.

“I exited my vehicle and advised other officers that we would have to secure (Christopher’s) leg shackles to his handcuffs for his safety and ours,” Pitner wrote in the affidavit.

Christopher was placed on his stomach and the handcuffs were secured to the leg restraints with plastic flex cuffs, the affidavit said.

“During the trip to the jail, Robert would alternate between laying down and kicking the ceiling of my vehicle and sitting up and headbutting the metal cage in my vehicle,” wrote Pitner in the affidavit.

Once at the jail, deputies administered a sobriety test on Christopher on a portable breath test machine. The result was a .14 breath alcohol concentration, the affidavit said.

He was placed in a detox cell, where he began kicking and headbutting the cell, according to the affidavit, and afterward, he was placed in a restraint chair, the affidavit said.

Christopher remained in jail on a $2,000 bond on Tuesday, according to the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.
