Pedestrian Dies After Being Hit By Vehicle In Marion

On June 10, 2019 at approximately 10:36 am, Marion Police responded to Spencer Ave. and Baldwin Ave. in reference to a vehicle that struck a pedestrian.
Albert Mayforth, age 85 of Marion advised that he was southbound on Baldwin Ave. Mayforth advised that he was enroute to the grocery store. As he approached the intersection of Baldwin Ave and Spencer Ave, he checked his passenger side rear view mirror in preparation to merge safely into the right hand lane. Mr. Mayforth advised that he remembers the light being green and that he was only checking for vehicle traffic in the right hand lane. Mr. Mayforth advised that he entered the intersection and suddenly realized that he had hit a person and stopped immediately. * Mayforth was driving a 2011’ Chevy Traverse.
A witness reported that all traffic was stopped when Mr. Mayforth’s entered the intersection and struck Mr. DeJanovich.
The victim Peter DeJanovich, age 64 of Marion was walking eastbound on Spencer Ave. Mr. DeJanovich was crossing the street when he was struck by Mayforth’s vehicle. Mr. DeJanovich appeared to have sustained serious bodily injuries (internal and head) and was unable to speak to officers. Mr. DeJanovich was immediately transported to Marion General Hospital and then transported to Lutheran Hospital of Indiana in Fort Wayne. * Mr. DeJanovich is reported to be in critical condition.
Police do not suspect that alcohol was a factor in this crash. This investigation is ongoing.
Pedestrian Peter J. DeJanovich has died due to the injuries he sustained in the vehicular crash listed above. The medical staff of Lutheran Hospital of Indiana pronounced Mr. DeJanovich’s death at 5:15 pm. The cause of death is a result of Multiple Blunt Force Injures.
