North Miami High School Student Suspended and placed in Juvenile Detention Center

KOKOMO, Ind. – This from the Kokomo Tribune: A North Miami high school student has been suspended and placed in a juvenile detention center after school administrators say he made a social media post picturing a gun and a message referencing “bullets flying.” High School Principal Adrian Richie said he became aware of the post Friday morning after other students showed him a Snapchat posted by the student. He said administrators immediately called law enforcement and then brought the student in for questioning. Richie said the student told administrators the post was only a joke. Miami County Det. Sgt. Mike Rogers said an investigation revealed the weapon depicted in the photo was some kind of airsoft or BB gun. He said investigators believe the message posted along with the photo was based on lyrics from a rap song. Rogers said the post did not make any direct threats to any student or North Miami schools. He said investigators believe the student did not have a gun at the school, and other students and staff were not in immediate danger. Richie said the student has been placed on a 10-day, out-of-school suspension and could face expulsion. Rogers said the student was also arrested on an initial charge of intimidation via social media and transported to an out-of-county juvenile detention facility. Miami County Prosecutor Bruce Embrey said after reviewing the initial report, his office determined it was best to detain the student. Miami County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Jeff Sinkovics said Monday they have not officially filed any charges against the student. He said the juvenile is set for a hearing Tuesday morning to determine whether he should be released from the detention center. Richie said the incident highlights the school district’s zero-tolerance policy for any kind of threat, whether it’s real or implied.
