MSD of Wabash County Board of School Trustees met Tuesday Night

WABASH COUNTY, Ind. – The Metropolitan School District of Wabash County Board of School Trustees met to conduct business on Tuesday night.

Board of Finance Meeting

Board of Finance President Todd Dazey called the meeting to order.

Dr. Kuhn reported on the Investments and gave a 2018 review.  He provided financial goals for 2019-2021:

  • Maintain an Education Fund balance that is equivalent or better than two months (four payrolls) of payroll, while increasing pay, benefits, and programming needs. (The average payroll for 2018 was $497,212.12.)

  • Increase Rainy Day Fund to $1,000,000.

  • Pay off Self-Insurance deficit.

Spotlight:

  • NHS Student Bella (Yzabelle Stangl ): NHS English Teacher Ms. Brenda Carey: Ms. Carey recognized that Bella was having student conflict and she helped her with those issues during the 8th grade year.

Northfield Jr./Sr. High School

  • Northfield would like to congratulate the girls’ varsity basketball team for winning the Wabash County Tournament – We are very proud of these young ladies!

Southwood Elementary School

  • SES 5th & 6th grade students recently competed in spelling bees in order to select our representatives for the Kiwanis & Journal-Gazette Spelling Bees. These four students will participate in the Kiwanis Bee: 5th graders Sophie Temple & Connor Clifton; 6th graders Gabe Mealy & Elijah Boone. Elijah will represent SES in the Journal-Gazette Bee, which is for the overall winner at the school level. Both of those spelling bees will be held at Wabash Middle School on January 21. A big “Thank You” to Mr. Keaffaber for coming to be the announcer for the event. We appreciate his support of our students, and his pronunciation skills were excellent!

Central Office

  • Safety Audit – Principal Andrew McDaniel and all school staffs for the work completed on the School Safety Plans and receiving a successful audit.

Superintendent report:

  • 2018 Graduation Rates were released.

    • NHS/SHS Combined: 97.9% (143/140)

    • NHS 97.33% (75/73)

    • SHS 98.53% (68/67)

    • White’s 59.72% (72/43)

    • MSDWC 85.12% (215/183)

Curriculum report:

  • Mr. Drake reported that our 10th grade students scored higher than the state average on the PSAT test this school year.

  • Mr. Drake is excited to announce that we will be hosting SAT School Day at Northfield and Southwood for our juniors and seniors.  This will be an optional test session for students who want to take the SAT. Additionally, we will pay testing fees for juniors.

Financials: General Fund balance at the end of 2018 was 3.4 million+

New Business:

  • Preschool (Little Knights & Little Norse) Program expansion 2019-2020.  The School Board approved the program expansion up to two classrooms at Southwood Elementary School and three at Metro North Elementary School.

  • Superintendent Keaffaber’s contract was extended to June 30, 2020, as per the language of the contract.
