Miami County Sheriff’s Office accepting applications for Merit Deputy Sheriff

MIAMI COUNTY, IN- The Miami County Sheriff’s Office is currently accepting applications for the position of Merit Deputy Sheriff. 

Applications may be obtained on-line at www.miamicountyin.gov/367/Sheriffs-Office or picked-up at the office located at 1104 W 200 N, Peru, IN 46970.

Lateral transfer applications by accredited ILEA officers are encouraged.

Qualifications for appointment as a Miami County Deputy Sheriff: 
1.  Must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment.

2.  Must be willing to reside in Miami County.

3.  Must possess a high school diploma or GED certificate.

4.  Must possess a valid Indiana driver’s license. 

5.  Successfully complete the hiring board process consisting of physical     standards testing, written examinations, oral interviews, culminating in final deliberations by the Sheriff and Merit Board. 

6.  Successfully pass a background investigation which shows the applicant is of good moral character, never convicted of a domestic violence charge or felony crime, fiscally responsible, no history of drug or alcohol abuse, and successful completion of a polygraph examination. (A drug test may also be administered prior to an offer of employment)

Upon appointment as a Miami County Deputy Sheriff: 
A.  The appointee is placed on a one-year probationary status. 

B.  Must complete an initial 40 hour pre-basic law enforcement course. 

C.  Must attend and successfully complete a 15 week course of instruction at the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Academy in Plainfield Indiana, consisting of written exams, physical testing, and practical exercises. 

D.  Upon completion of the Academy, the appointee must complete an additional 12 week field training officer program under the mentorship of veteran instructor certified deputies. 

*If the appointee has successfully completed all the above steps, he or she is released to perform their official duties as a law enforcement officer in the state of Indiana. 

*All law enforcement officers in the state of Indiana must complete a minimum of 24 hours of yearly in-service training to maintain their enforcement powers. 

Starting salary: $42,079

Benefits: Health insurance, paid vacation (minimum 10 days after one year of service, maximum 25 days after 21 years of service), 14 paid holidays per year, and accumulated sick leave (maximum 30 day yearly carryover).
