MIAMI COUNTY, Ind. – Miami Correctional Facility’s Turkey Rumble Food Drive, was held recently as five turkeys competed, racing around the “track” to see which team could collect the most food for local food pantries.
MCF more than doubled its collections this year over last year.  K-Bracket alone brought in 2,016 items, in winning the “race”.  Last year’s total collection was 1,643 items.  This year, the total collection was 4,077 items.
The facility split the booty between the Salvation Army in Peru and the Kokomo Rescue Mission.  The winning team was promised a pizza party.  This year instead of receiving the Pizza Party, K-Bracket asked that whatever would have ben spent on the party be donated to the two food pantries.  So each food pantry was given $62.50 as well the food items.  Items collected included everything from canned fruits and vegetables to cereal and boxes of mac and cheese.
To make the competition more visual, each team was given a turkey and a track was put up around the facility’s entry way.  As teams brought in items, they got to see their turkey move along the track.  The facility began collecting items on November 1st and delivered everything before Thanksgiving.
“During the holidays, it’s important to remember there are families who don’t have enough food on their tables to celebrate,”  Superintendent Kathy Griffin, said.  “I am so proud of my staff for thinking of others during the holiday season.  We have a lot of good caring staff and with their donations, more families were able to enjoy the holiday season.”
