Maconaquah 8th grade STEM program receives funds to purchase supplies

BUNKER HILL, IN- The 8th Grade Team at Maconaquah Middle School would like to thank Wal-Mart of Wabash for supporting our efforts to teach practical STEM-related lessons to our students this past year.

Maconaquah Middle School is STEM certified through the State of Indiana. We work hard to teach lessons that include STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and integrate them into math, science, reading, and Language Arts. Often students ask us the question, “When are we ever going to need to know this?” During May, our students spent 5 days working to “Solve the Mystery of Carnival,” where they experienced how school topics such as ratios, measurement, velocity, acceleration, history, cooking, and more apply to real-life experiences that many of them love!

The $1500 that the 8th Grade Team received from Wabash Wal-Mart helped fund supplies necessary for students to participate in the following activities.

Making apple turnovers, and chocolate-covered bananas.

Learning about carnivals in other cultures and then creating their own decorations for those festivities.

Learning the history of carnival games and then creating their own variations from plywood.

Creating roller coasters.

Using Cricut Design Space to create and make personalized t-shirts.

Venturing to Malibu Jack’s Indoor Theme Park in Lafayette…here they were able to see firsthand the inner workings of a roller coaster as Malibu Jack’s head of maintenance explained how the coaster worked.

Once again thank you to the Wabash Wal-Mart for your generous contribution toward the Middle School STEM program.
