Kersey Awarded Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship

WABASH,Indiana – The 2016 Wabash County Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship when to Southwood High School Senior Kolten Kersey. The scholarship award essentially provides a full ride to the winner if they attend a college or university in the Hoosier state. Kersey will attend Indiana University Bloomington studying pre-medicine, with his long-term goal of attending medical school and becoming a neurosurgeon.

At Southwood, Kersey is a member of the Student Congress, Jazz Band, Spanish Club, County Honors Band, National Honor’s Society and participates in the Knight’s Roundtable, which is an after school torturing program. He also volunteers his time at the Access Youth Center and in the Teens Touching Hearts program, which links teens to charitable organizations.

Kersey, who is frankly a young man of few words, on winning the prestigious Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship.

Kersey told MiBash News that he has wanted to be a doctor since elementary school. And his proud parents, Gina and Bob Kersey, back that up. Bob Kersey said that his son is extremely passionate, but he doesn’t show it outwardly. He shows it, Bob Kersey said, by doing the things he puts his mind to.

Gina Kersey added that she was absolutely speechless when she found out Kolten had been awarded the scholarship. She went on to say that a financial weight lifted off the family’s shoulders with the announcement. Gina Kersey.

Julie Garber, Community Foundation of Wabash County Program Director, said that Kersey can now attend a medical school with the mountain of debt that saddles most college graduates.

Drake expressed a huge sense of pride at the realization that a Southwood student has earned the prestigious scholarship in Wabash County two years in a row. He added that Kolten is most certainly in the running to make either Valedictorian or Salutatorian for the May 28th graduation ceremony for Southwood’s 2016 graduating class.
