WABASH, IN – Honeywell Arts In Education invites the public to a special celebration of the Honeywell CommUNITY Arts program on Wednesday, November 8, at 7:00 p.m. at the Manchester Administrative Office Auditorium. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. for the free event, which will feature artwork by CommUNITY Arts student participants. Guests will also be able to mingle with Emily Guerrero, teaching artist, and students while enjoying dessert.
CommUNITY Arts is a multi-week collaboration between Honeywell Arts In Education and Manchester Community Schools. CommUNITY Arts originated through a program entitled ‘We The Many,’ which was provided through a grant from Arts Midwest. Success from this original endeavor compelled Honeywell Arts In Education to continue this important work under the new program name, CommUNITY Arts.
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month’s theme of Latinos: Driving Prosperity, Power, and Progress in America, the reception celebration is a culmination of the program and will allow students to share art they have created that symbolizes a Latino person or organization.
Teaching artist Emily Guerrero embodies her Mexican ancestral traditions as she encourages audiences to expand their knowledge of diverse cultures in their midst. Her performances, installation arts, and workshops for various age audiences offer insights into the diverse montage of the multicultural communities. She is a dedicated and passionate advocate of cultural arts. Throughout her
career, Emily has served as an advocate in leadership roles for the development of culturally inclusive programs.
Robert Weber, EL/Spanish Teacher at Manchester Junior-Senior High School, states, “Honeywell CommUNITY Arts Artist Residencies have allowed for transformational student growth. Students who were typically shy and reserved gained newfound confidence to share their voices and experiences in a unique, artistic way that they would not have otherwise had the opportunity to do in a regular classroom setting.”
The Honeywell CommUNITY Arts Program is made possible through the generosity of funders such as the Flagstar Foundation, with additional support from the Indiana Arts Commission, which receives support from the State of Indiana and the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Indiana Department of Education. Of particular note this year is the Fellowship for Creative Teaching grant awarded through the Indiana Arts Commission. Nicole Brubaker, EL/Spanish Teacher at Manchester Junior-Senior
