STATEHOUSE (Oct. 27, 2016) – State Rep. Bill Friend (R-Macy) and State Sen. Randy Head (R-Logansport) presented Indiana Teacher of the Year Jitka Nelson with a Sagamore of the Wabash on Thursday for her dedication and commitment to education.

Currently, Nelson teaches English, language arts and developmental reading at Logansport Community High School. She has been an educator for 25 years.

“Jitka’s dedication to the students and families of our community is truly amazing. Great teachers drive student success. I am grateful that we have such a talented teacher working in our schools,” Friend said. “Jitka exemplifies the qualities of her profession, and she is truly deserving of this honor.”

Nelson will represent Indiana in the National Teacher of the Year Program’s competition in the coming months.

“Teachers play an extremely important role in the lives of our children, and it is an honor to have this year’s top teacher right here in Logansport,” Head said. “I commend Jitka for her efforts in the community, and extend my deepest appreciation to all of our Indiana educators who continually invest in the lives of the next generation of Hoosiers.”

The Sagamore of the Wabash award is one of the highest honors the governor of Indiana can bestow upon a Hoosier. Recipients of this award have demonstrated distinguished service to the state.
