PERU, IN – A jury trial has been scheduled for the 18-year-old Jonesboro woman who investigators say organized a plot that led to a Summitville man being beat to death in a state forest near Peru known as Okie Pinokie. Brittany Morris is set for a two-week jury trail starting Feb. 11in Miami County Circuit Court. She faces felony charges of aiding or inducing murder, aiding or inducing robbery resulting in serious bodily injury and a misdemeanor charge of theft. Police say Morris conspired with Joshua Kean, 24, of Lafontaine, and Ethan Cain, 22, of Marion, to rob Drake Smith, who she knew would have illegal drugs. That plot led to Francis Slocum State Forest, located off of Ind. 24 in rural Miami County, where investigators say Kean and Cain beat Smith to death with a metal pipe after a party in the woods on May 19. Smith’s body was found in the forest by mushroom hunters just before 10 a.m. on May 19. Cain faces charges of murder, obstruction of justice, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury and theft. He is scheduled for a pre-trial conference on Dec. 13 in Miami Circuit Court. Kean faces charges of murder, assisting a criminal, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, obstruction of justice and theft. His next court appearance is a pre-trial conference scheduled for Jan. 3.
