Former Wabash City Council member Joan Haag is the 2016 Wabash Distinguished Citizen.

She received the award Thursday night during the 75th annual Wabash County Chamber of Commerce annual dinner.

Haag received the award from Kim Pinkerton, who retired as Chamber president earlier this year.

Pinkerton read a brief biography of Haag, highlighting, among other things, her love for candy. She also spoke about the time that Haag’s brother, Jim Vice, saved her life by holding her upside down and pounding on her back to dislodge a piece of candy that was stuck in her throat.

“I guess I should thank my brother for saving my life,” Haag quipped as she was joined on the Legacy Hall stage by her daughter, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and brother.

The presentation was the highlight of the evening, which also saw Brandt’s Harley Davidson receive the 2016 Business of the Year award.

Also during the dinner, the2016 Chamber chair Aaron Campbell received a plaque for his service. He then passed the gavel to incoming chair Paul McCann.
