Peru Student Arrested

PERU, Ind. – On Wednesday, October 11, 2017, at approximately 11:53 am, officers from the Peru Police Department responded to a call of threats being made by a juvenile student at Peru Junior High School.  Officers learned the juvenile student made threats via social media platforms to harm students at the school on Monday when students return to school from fall break.  The Peru Police Department Patrol Division and the Peru Police Department Criminal Investigations Division immediately launched an investigation into the threats.  In less than one hour, officers located the juvenile and took him into custody.  It was learned that the juvenile had access to firearms, and a search warrant was later executed by patrol officers to obtain any firearms in which the juvenile had access.  After conducting interviews with other witnesses, the juvenile was placed in a secure juvenile detention center and charged with Intimidation and Dangerous Possession of a Firearm. The Peru Police Department has been in contact with Peru Community Schools regarding this matter.  At no time were any Peru Community School students in any danger thanks to brave individuals who reported this incident to the police.  While there is no reason to believe that there is any current threat to any students at any Peru Community Schools, parents and students should expect to see police presence in and around the schools on Monday when students return from fall break. The Peru Police Department thanks the Miami County Prosecutor’s Office, the Miami County Probation Department, and Peru Community Schools for their assistance in this matter.  The Peru Police Department reminds students and citizens alike that if you see something, say something.  It could save a life.
