Peru man arrested on multiple felony charges

PERU, IN- On January 8, 2024, at approximately 6:36 pm, officers from the Peru Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 50 block of Madison Avenue for a reported physical domestic dispute. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the alleged victim who alleged that she had been battered by a male identified as Leon F. Black, 42, of Peru. The victim further alleged that Black was in possession of a firearm and allegedly made threats to harm the victim, family members, and law enforcement.

As part of the investigation, officers determined that Black was inside his residence, but would not respond to officers. At that time, officers from the Peru Police Department applied for, and were granted a search warrant for Black’s residence to take him into custody and to search the residence for evidence associated with the alleged offenses. Due to the nature of the alleged offenses involving a firearm, and with Black refusing to exit his residence, the Peru Police Department requested the assistance of the Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team.

When the Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team arrived at the residence, the team breached the residence and were able to convince Black to surrender to officers without further incident. Black was taken into custody and transported to the Miami County Jail where he was charged with Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon, a Level 6 Felony, Intimidation, a Level 6 Felony, and Domestic Battery, a Class A Misdemeanor. A subsequent search of the residence uncovered evidence associated with the alleged crimes.

The Peru Police Department was assisted by the Miami County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police, Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team, and the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.
