Maconaquah HS Academic Super Bowl team wins Third State Championship in Four Years

BUNKER HILL, Ind. – Maconaquah High School’s Academic Super Bowl team continued its success streak this spring with its third state championship in four years. The team’s Fine Arts squad won first place at the state competition at Purdue University earlier this month. Also, 2018 was the first year the team had two squads qualify for the state competition. The Social Studies squad placed third at the state competition. MHS teachers Helene Banina and Andrew Berryman coach the team. She noted that three students were on both of the squads that qualified for state: senior Josh Catanzaro, senior Adam Copp, and freshmen Gabriella Weaver. Freshman Anastasia Spahr was also a member of the Fine Arts squad, and junior Zach Alvarado was also a member of the Social Studies squad. The Indiana Association of School Principals (IASP), which sponsors the ASB competition, names the top ten schools for each of its four classes. These schools accumulate the best total scores at Area Competitions in all areas of study. Maconaquah was named a Top Ten school in Class 2 for the first time this year, adding another layer to the team’s success this year. These victories were particularly emotional for Banina since she is retiring at the end of the school year.
