Honeywell Heartland Media Arts students to showcase work at Eagles Theatre

WABASH, IN – The Media Arts Program, a collaboration between Honeywell Arts & Entertainment and Heartland Career Center, will showcase original photography, photo editing, graphic design, audio production, and video production completed by the 2022-23 class on Wed. May 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Eagles Theatre. Following the presentation, a reception will take place in the Parkview Ballroom at Eagles. Admission to the event is free and open to the public.

Launched in 2017, the Media Arts Program prepares high school students for careers in business and/or media-related industries by developing their understanding of professional business practices, written and verbal communication skills, and industry tools. The program takes place at the Eagles Theatre, where the INGUARD Editing Suite and Haist Family Studio provide hands-on learning opportunities in audio/video production.

Jessica Keffaber, Education Media Manager at Honeywell Arts & Entertainment, serves as the instructor for the 25- member class, which includes students from Manchester, MSD of Wabash County, North Miami, Oak Hill, Peru, and Wabash High School. Fifteen students are graduating seniors.

When asked about the most important concept learned this year from the Media Arts Program, Northfield High School senior James Griffey states, “This year, I have expanded my skills beyond what I thought I could. I have learned how to properly set up camera and audio equipment and use several different editing and creation software.” Southwood High School junior Sarah Smith adds, “The most important thing I have learned this year is how to work well with others. At the beginning of the year, I struggled with socializing and working as a team. At this point in the year, things have drastically changed for me. I have learned how to work with other creative minds to make something we can all be proud of.”

After completing the Media Arts Program, graduated students have begun careers in the media industry and/or moved on to study Media Arts in college. Graduate of the program Layla Durocher, Media Production major at Ball State University and 2022 Peru High School graduate, states, “The program was extremely important to me in furthering my career. The skill set that I had leaving high school was much more advanced than a lot of my college peers. It allowed me to join student organizations, like Ball State’s student radio station, and complete any task, assignment, or project with confidence, which then made my freshman year so much easier to navigate!” In addition to Layla, current Media Arts student Addie France, Northfield High School senior, has started her own photography business and has begun taking paid jobs ahead of graduation. She says, “I will be able to use all of my knowledge gained this year to help me run my photography business.”
