Offerings include literature-based productions and cultural immersion performances
WABASH, Ind.- Honeywell Arts In Education has announced the 2021-22 Student Matinee lineup featuring three “page-to-stage” productions based on literary works and two cultural immersion performances. Student Matinees are held during the school day to accommodate school groups but are open to the public as well.
The announcement of the matinee performances comes during National Arts In Education Week, which recognizes the impact and transformative power of the arts in schools and other educational settings.
2021-22 Student Matinee performances include:
Sones de Mexico Ensemble: Fiesta Mexicana – Tuesday, October 26 at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. at Eagles Theatre
Sones de México has taught and performed for thousands of children in cities all over the country. The group takes audiences on a journey through Mexican music and the magic world that surrounds it, including the four sacred elements of nature for the Aztecs: water, earth, fire, and wind. Audiences will learn songs about animals in the Mexican ecosystem including acamayas, crocodiles, and even legendary mermaids. Audiences will participate in learning Mexican clapping rhythms and learn about tempo. Fluency in Spanish is not required.
Schoolhouse Rock Live! – Tuesday, November 23 at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. at the Honeywell Center
Academic subjects will never seem boring again when you see them presented as mega-hits like “Conjunction Junction,” “Just a Bill,” “Interplanet Janet” or “Three is a Magic Number.” Schoolhouse Rock Live is updated for a whole new generation with imaginative image projections and a rock n’ roll feel. The performance centers around Tom, a nervous young teacher who turns on the television and is visited by three aspects of his personality who remind him how learning can be fun!
The Pout Pout Fish – Monday, March 7 at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. at the Honeywell Center
Turn the poutiest of frowns upside down in this new musical featuring whimsical puppets and live performers in a sweeping oceanic adventure. When Mr. Fish sets out on a quest to find Miss Clam’s missing pearl, he discovers there is more to him than his permanently plastered pout.
Frindle – Monday, April 11 at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. at the Honeywell Center
Based on the award-winning best-selling novel by Andrew Clements, this quirky, imaginative tale about creative thought and the power of words will have young audiences inventing their own words! The stage production tells the story of Nicholas Allen, a youngster with plenty of ideas. When he ends up in Mrs. Granger’s language arts class, he has his best idea ever… creating the word “frindle.” Before long, Nick’s word creates a buzz in his school, his town and then to his surprise it spreads all around the country, and a power struggle erupts with the strict Mrs. Granger. Will “frindle” win?
Jarochicanos – Monday, May 9 at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. at Eagles Theatre
Jarochicanos is a multi-generational collective from Chicago with a deep appreciation and love of the centuries-old music tradition from southern Veracruz, México, Son Jarocho. This colorful, interactive, bilingual concert includes traditional and contemporary children’s songs and lively participation through movement, singing and dance.
