Head-on crash kills 2 Huntington women

HUNTINGTON COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – Two Huntington women are dead after a head-on crash in Huntington County Sunday morning.

The Huntington County Sheriff’s Department says the crash happened around 11:18 a.m. on State Road 16 and County Road 635 West near Huntington.

A 1998 Buick was traveling eastbound on State Road 16 when it went off the south shoulder. The driver, identified as Kelli S. Koontz, 58, attempted to regain control and overcorrected. The car then crossed the center line and left the roadway. As it returned to the road, it slid into the path of a westbound pickup truck.

The driver of the pickup truck, David Boyd, 54 of Urbana tried to avoid the Buick by swerving left, but the vehicles collided head-on.

Both Koontz and her front seat passenger, Sandra K. Prichard, 71, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Boyd was transported to the hospital by EMS. His front seat passenger, Valerie Boyd, 42, and backseat passenger, Carter Rogers, 11 were both airlifted.

The crash is under investigation.
