UPDATE: Fatal head on crash in Huntington County victims identified

UPDATE: HUNTINGTON COUNTY, IN- Mohamed Najed, age 37, of Fort Wayne, Indiana was the restrained driver of a 2008 Honda Accord that was traveling eastbound on CR 900 North near 4924 East, when for reasons unknown traveled into the westbound driving lane of the 4-lane roadway. He continued in that lane until Robert G. Howey, age 49, of Huntington, Indiana appeared and attempted to avoid the collision, however, both vehicles veered into the same lane, colliding, and coming to rest in the eastbound driving lanes after impact. Mr. Najed’s vehicle was forced against the railroad overpass retaining wall and Mr. Howey’s vehicle overturned on the roadway coming to rest on its top. Mr. Najed was restrained and pinned in the wreckage, requiring extrication by the Roanoke Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Howey was unrestrained and was not ejected. Both drivers were alone in their vehicles and were pronounced deceased at the scene by theHuntington County Coroner’s Office.

Original release: HUNTINGTON COUNTY, IN- Monday, at approximately 11:55pm, a fatal head on collision occurred in Huntington County.

Driver of vehicle one was eastbound on CR 900 North near 4924 East, when for reasons unknown traveled into the westbound lane of the 4-lane road. Driver of vehicle two was westbound and attempted to avoid the collision, however, both vehicles veered into the same lane, colliding, and coming to rest in the eastbound driving lanes after impact. 

Vehicle one was forced against the railroad overpass retaining wall and vehicle two overturned on the roadway coming to rest on its top. 

Driver of vehicle one was restrained and was pinned in the wreckage, requiring extrication by the Roanoke Volunteer Fire Department. Driver of vehicle two was unrestrained and was not ejected.

Both drivers were pronounced deceased at the scene by the Huntington County Coroner’s Office. The names of the decedents will be released after notification of next of kin. Autopsies are pending at this time.

The investigation into the crash continues with the Huntington County Sheriff’s Office F.A.C.Team and the Huntington County Coroner’s Office.
