The Wabash City Board of Zoning Appeals unanimously approved a variance to permit ground-floor apartments at the Rock City Lofts.
The board voted 5-0 Thursday night to grant the request to clear the way for work on the project.
Architects had proposed adding a fourth floor to the structure to allow apartments there. However, to qualify for historic tax credits, the fourth floor apartments were not allowed.
To allow the project to continue, architects opted to put seven apartments on the first floor. With those seven, there will now be 41 units for tenants of 55 years of age or older.
Work on the project could begin in the next 90 days.
For more on the project, see the Aug. 31 edition of The Paper of Wabash.
